Unhallowed Arts

In honor of the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Unhallowed Arts was an experimental art festival that explored the book’s continued impact on art, technology and culture.

The Event
Unhallowed Arts was an experimental art festival—or rather an art monstrosity—that took place from September to December 2018 in Perth, Australia. The festival included a diverse set of events including numerous exhibitions throughout Perth and Fremantle, an academic conference at The University of Western Australia, performances, artist talks, and a short-run of 16mm films at the State Library of Western Australia.

The Design Concept
Considering the festival included a myriad of events, each with a unique visual identity, Unhallowed Arts was designed to be fluid to reflect the experimental nature of the projects featured in the festival. The underlying structure of the logo, a 4×4 grid, was consistent while the letterforms were dynamic—shifting and warping over time—thereby reflecting the diversity of events in the festival.

The visual identity used variable letterforms to represent the variety of events at the festival.
