Quite Frankly

Quite Frankly was an academic conference held at The University of Western Australia that brought together international academics from numerous disciplines to discuss the long-lasting influence that Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein had on science, culture and the arts.

Design Problem
The legacy of Frankenstein presents an immediate problem: how do you design something that references a popular icon, but avoids many of its visual clichés.  Most of the obvious references to Frankenstein were eliminated: stitches, bolts, green monsters and lightning.

Design Solution
After reviewing many of the Frankenstein book covers created over the past 200 years there was a consistent use of gothic typefaces for the title. With typography in mind, a logo was designed to reference this visual literary trope while also utilizing contemporary forms.
