Neolife: Non-western Approaches to Life
NeoLife was an academic conference hosted at The University of Western Australia that brought together scientists, artists, philosophers, and cultural theorists as part of the Society for Literature, Sciences and the Arts. The focus of the conference was to present and discuss non-western understandings of the concept of life and they’re influence on science, art and culture.
The visual identity of the conference featured several subtle metaphors that combined western and non-western readings styles. In the poster and conference catalog, the Western directional arrow was removed from the map’s compass. The Gall-Peter’s projection was used in lieu of the Mercator map.
Additionally, some countries were removed from the map. The majority of the text on the cover and poster were was right justified to reference a reading convention of right to left. Ultimately, the visual language was designed to combine Western and Non-western reading conventions.
